Saharan Dust Is Settling on Your Car — Don't Wipe It, Wash It

Noticed the hazy sky this week? The milky look at midday, the sunsets going full Texas-postcard? That's Saharan dust — a plume of fine desert grit that rides the wind all the way across the Atlantic most summers and settles over North Texas. It's here now, forecasters expect another round within days, and a good share of it is landing on your paint.

Why you shouldn't wipe it off

Saharan dust isn't like pollen. It's fine mineral particulate — basically airborne sandpaper. When it builds up as that dull film on your hood, the worst thing you can do is grab a towel or a duster and wipe it dry. Dragging mineral grit across clearcoat is how paint picks up the micro-scratches and swirl marks you see spiderwebbing under sunlight.

It gets worse when it rains. Dust in the air seeds the raindrops, so a quick July shower comes down as mud rain — dirty droplets that dry into gritty spots and then bake in at 100° pavement temperatures.

The right move: lift it, then rinse it

Dust needs to come off with chemistry and water, not friction. Every wash we run starts with Select 35 presoak — it soaks the film and lifts it off the surface so it rinses away instead of getting rubbed in. That's exactly the order of operations dust calls for:

Dust season is what touch-free was made for

If there was ever a week for a zero-contact wash, it's this one. Bay 1 runs the only fully touch-free wash option in town — no brushes, no contact, just presoak chemistry and high-pressure water. Nothing touches your paint, so there's nothing to drag the grit across it. And it's the same $13 / $16 / $19 packages as soft-touch — the wash mode is your call, the price doesn't change.

Prefer soft-touch? You're still covered — the presoak does its lifting before the brush pass ever starts, and the foam is fed with fresh solution, not recycled grime.

One more layer of defense

Deluxe and Ultimate washes finish with Rain Shield sealant — and Ultimate adds Renew Ceramic Coating. A sealed, slick surface gives dust less to cling to, and the next film rinses off that much easier. During a dusty stretch like this one, that protection earns its keep between washes.

Five minutes, any hour

The dust plume will pass — the scratches from wiping it wouldn't. We're on Hwy 377, open 24/7, and a full wash takes about five minutes. Come rinse the Sahara off.
